About Your Host

Sean Hocking has always been obsessed with dissonant and different music and puts it down to growing up in the Caribbean and the memory of steel bands as his first real music experience. Their volume, excitement, color, dissonance, and celebration have informed everything that has followed.

Some favorite music experiences include seeing Roxy Music play Virginia Plain on UK weekly music show Top of the Pops (throw in a few years later seeing the Sex Pistols, Pretty Vacant on the same show). Black Flag’s first UK performance in 1980/81? at the Lyceum on the Strand, they were first on the bill at 2pm and nothing was the same after that! Public Enemy supported LL Cool J on their first visit to the UK, The Stone Roses at Spike Island, Gil Scott Heron at the Brighton Top Rank, and Lonnie Holley playing in the small park opposite Mississippi records in Portland several years back. Nigerian drummer Gaspar Lawal on the World Stage at Glastonbury in 1987, and I will never forget every time I had a chance to catch the Australian band the Triffids, my generation’s Velvet Underground.

Suppose I had to mention albums; the five off the top of my head would Be The Scream by Siouxsie & The Banshees. In that case, Every Man & Woman Is A Star by UK outfit Ultramarine, Elvis Sun Sessions, The Heart of the Congos & yes, you guessed it, Born Sandy Devotional by the Triffids.

You may also be vaguely interested to know I have run for the past 20 odd years the perennially underperforming DIY label Metal Postcard Records, which has included some fantastic artists, including The Cambodia Space Project, Swoop Swoop (Australia), White Fang (USA), Dj Foundation (Iraq), Legless Crabs (USA), The Bordellos (UK) and current faves of the internet Neon Kittens (UK).
